Classic & vintage carp rods

Classic & vintage carp rods

Carp has been specifically fished for decades, so carp rods have been developed for ten years. This started in the early 1900's with simple bamboo rods and later it was changed to the more beautiful splitcane rods (also made of bamboo). These splitcane carp rods are becoming rarer and rarer and are fantastic rods to wander with the pen on carp. Many of the rods from this era that still exist today are handmade splitcane carp rods. Bruce & Walker hexagraph rods and the rods of Richard Walker are very famous. By the way, the hexagraph rods are not of good quality, but mostly known for their appearance and rarity.
Next came glass rods for carp fishing, then we are talking about about 30 to 40 years ago. Known and popular glass rods from the Netherlands are the Fairplay rods made by Jan Schreiner. They are not rare, but have a good price/quality ratio and a fantastic parabolic action. Well-known glass rods from abroad come for example from Alan Brown, Kevin Maddox and of course Hardy. Because these are internationally sold brands, the price is often a lot higher.
Among the special graphite carp rods you can think of CJW by Cor Spinhoven or Casting Corner by Peeters from the Netherlands. Very popular because they are all beautifully handmade. If you are looking for graphite carp rods from abroad you can not (again) avoid the Hardy carp rods.
In the end most rods are made of carbon. But the first models of carbon carp rods are also beginning to be collected and seen as classics. Just like with the windmills you see the brand Shimano passing by here. Shimano started late in fishing but immediately made top quality. So the first carbon carp rods are becoming classics because of the Shimano powerloop, Shimano twinpower, Shimano diaflash and Shimano ultegra.

An important aspect when buying a vintage carp rod is what you are going to use it for. In the old days it was mainly trained on carp with a pen rod. The above mentioned rods are mainly pen rods. Static carp fishing only started in the 80s. If you are looking for old carp rods for static fishing you will soon find the first carbon carp rods and some graphite rods. But most of them are mainly developed for penfishing.

Tip: Hang the old splitcane rods upside down so they don't bend (quickly).
