New & used fly reels

New & used fly reels

A fly rod is an unique rod compared to the other fishing rods. This is also the case with the fly reel. It can only be used with a fly rod. It is a rather simple reel in design and use. This is with a reason. Becasue with fly fishing the focus and effort is merely put in the casting of the fly rod. Just like with the fly rod the size and strength is described in "weight", also described in .wt. The .wt can also be mentoined with a hastag #. The .wt of the reel has to be about the same as the rod.

Important for the fly reel is that it has enough space for the fly line and for the backing. This backing is the first line on the reel. The backing has to be strong enough for a fighting fish. With fly fishing the rod, the line and the fly/streamer are more important than the fly reel.

Which weight for which kind of fish with fly fishing?

The number of # or .wt doesn't mean that the rod or reel is build for a specific kind of fish, it mainly tells you something about the casting weight. A heavy fly or streamer means that you will need a heavier rod than usual. And also the other way around, if you use a small fly or nymph you need a light fly rod but still can catch a rather big fish.

#1-3: roach, trout and grayling
#4-6: large roach, perch, trout and large grayling
#7-8: carp, pike, salmon, large trout, small saltwater fish
#9-11: carp large salmon, large pike, large saltwater fish
#12-15: tuna, tarpon and other large saltwater fish
